Pancerniki Typu Bismarck cz. 5 - Bismarck/Tirpitz - Book Review

EOW 15 - Pancerniki Typu Bismarck cz. 1 - Tirpitz is the fift and final in a series of five books about the Bismarck Class battleships. The book is devoted to armour and superstructure of Bismarck and Tirpitz.

Book contents:

o Format is A4 size

o 84 pages + cover.

o 77 B/W pictures, with Polish/English captions

o 8 drawings

o 2 colour plates (paint schemes) by Zbigniew Kolacha

The text in the book is, except for captions, written in Polish which I sadly don't understand.

The book is richly illustrated with many photos of high quality, drawings, schemes and 28 pages shows the absolutely incredible 3D drawings made by Witold Hazuka (7 pages) and Stefan Draminski (21 pages). The 7 pages with 3D drawings by Witold Hazuka are showing the superstructure of Bismarck and the drawings are similar to the drawings shown on sheet V and VI in the fourth book, they just show the superstructure drawings from new angles. Would have been good to see 3D drawings of the complete ship, but I would believe they're not ready yet. The 21 pages with stunning 3D drawings made by Stefan Draminski shows the different armament used on Bismarck and Tirpitz.

Two pages (inside cover) shows paint schemes of Bismarck and Tirpitz, similar to the other books in this series.

Conclusion:

I highly recommend this book for ship modellers and Bismarck and Tirpitz enthusiasts. If you are lucky to own all five books in this series you have an excellent collection of books with wonderful photos, paint schemes, maps and histories of Bismarck and Tirpitz. Last but certainly not least, you will have a pretty complete set of drawings if Bismarck and Tirpitz and some wonderful 3D drawings to admire and enjoy.

If you have read all my five book reviews for the books in this series you will recognise how much I love these books. I looked very much forward to tell you all about these books as I'm sure many of you wont be aware that they exist or how good they really are.

No books are perfect and what is a perfect book anyway? But if you have an interest in Bismarck and/or Tirpitz you will enjoy these books. I will almost say, if not, then I'm not sure anything would satisfy you.

Despite of all the drawings you'll get with these five books I still miss some more and better drawings of some of the equipment on Bismarck and Tirpitz. A good example are the small boats. Some good drawings of the boats from different perspectives, like known from the Harhaus Bismarck drawings, would be very useful for a modeller and Bismarck Class enthusiast. Would have been perfect if a couple of sheets had been included to this volume showing detailed drawings of the small boats and other equipment not fully covered earlier in this series.

As mentioned earlier, then this book completes the series of five books about Bismarck and Tirpitz. A truly wonderful collection of resources for the person that have an interest in these famous German warships.

AJ-Press has announced that they plan to publish a separate book that deals with the camouflage of Bismarck and Tirpitz.

Pancerniki Typu Bismarck cz. 5 - Bismarck/Tirpitz - Scans from the Book
Excellent high quality photos shows valuable details of the searchlights. Great photos of the forecastle. 2 of these photos I have not seen published earlier.
Pages with detail photos, invaluable to the modeller. Despite this is low resolution scans for the internet you can still recognise the high quality of these photos.
Some of the amazing 3D drawings made by Stefan Draminski you can see in the book. Here is the 20 mm Flakvierlings. There are 20 other pages with his artwork. Here you can see the only colour photo shown in this book series. It is Tirpitz in Fættenfjord in Norway in 1942. It is on the back cover of the book. This photo marks the completion of a wonderful book series.
